Cambodia Gambling Halls

[ English ]

There is an interesting history to the Cambodia casinos that sit just across the border from nearby Thailand, where casino wagering is against the law. Eight casinos are anchored in a generally small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect destination, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income acquired from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; although, financial sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and even though visas are allegedly needed to pass, there are ways around this, as is real of many borders.

The first Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored bateau casino, contains one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slots and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machines and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational resort and hotel building that highlights numerous comforts in addition to the gambling hall, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 table games.
