There is a captivating story to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which casino betting is illegal. Eight gambling dens are based in a generally tiny location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent spot, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; although, financing sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 17:00, and although visas are allegedly needed to cross, there are methods around this, as is correct of many border crossings.
The first Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked barge casino, features one hundred and fifty slots and 60 tables. The Naga gambling hall is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred one armed bandits and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the common tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a comprehensive resort and hotel compound that contains many comforts in addition to the gambling den, which offers ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight tables.
